"More Barney than Buddhist": How the media framed the story of the little lama. Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, New Orleans, August 1999. This study explores the framing of the story of a young American boy believed to be the reincarnation of a Tibetan lama, finding that coverage depicted this event through four frames: American pop culture ‘R us; There’s no place like home; A mother’s place is with her son; and Buddhism is for Buddhists. The most striking findings suggest that commercial symbols appear to be replacing nationalistic or patriotic ones to represent America.
