Story ideas
- Keep a clip file of interesting
articles from magazines, newspapers and other sources.
- Attend meetings, conventions,
conferences, events that could lead to ideas or contacts.
- Listen to what people are
talking about. Has anyone told you about something interesting happening
where they work? With their family or friends? Listen in on other people's
conversations at lunch, in the student union, where you work.
- Change your routines. If
you drive to school or work the same way, go a different route. If you
always eat at the same restaurant or always shop at the same store,
go somewhere else and see if you notice anything that could lead to
a story.
- Brainstorm. Make a list
of ideas and let those ideas lead to others. Free associate. Don't edit
yourself.
- Notice everything around
you: billboards, classified ads, fliers, Internet sites, etc.
- Be aware of (but don't become
dependent on) story ideas lists offered by public relations agents and
public information officers.
