Review of the December 2007 Lecture

"The New & Amazing Archeology Discovery in Southern China"
--GuangDong Civilization During Early Han Dynasty (秦-汉时代)"

Speaker:    Dr. Fang Wang, Museum Director
The archeological discovery revealed so much about the state of this southern kingdom in China 2000 years ago that was mind-boggling. For example, its trade was not limited to that with China. There was active ocean commerce with Southeast Asian countries, India, and as far as Eastern Africa. One reason for such vibrant economy might be the highly advanced industrial technology as evidenced by the high caliber of iron/steel weaponry unearthed.

Book Recommendation 好書介紹

“The Commanders”, by Bob Woodward, 1999
There is no end in sight of the quagmire in Iraq for President Bush. Looking back, his father, President George H. W. Bush, successfully handled two wars during his presidency. Maybe the American public can learn something from George senior. In this book, the author documented in detail the events and the preparations leading to the Panama Invasion (arrest of Strong Man Noriega), and the Gulf War, respectively. No war was easy. No matter how carefully a war was prepared, there would always be miscalculations and casualties. Ironically on the American side, militaries, especially the Joint Chief Colin Powell, were mostly against wars, while the civilians, the President and his aids included, were eager to wage wars. Why? The military chiefs, with their combat experience, knew full well the cruelty of wars and suffering of the individuals. To the civilians in the government power center, wars were abstract and militaries their chess pieces. Colin Powell would urge reason before decision on declaring war was made. President Bush, on the other hand, was to a great extent, led by his emotion. The contrast between a military man and a politician could not be more vivid.
