Download
the template from the link at the left. Open it with Macromedia
Freehand and look at it. For this assignment, you will
create your own template based on the measurement you make on
the inkjet
labels
in class.
SAVE EARLY-SAVE OFTEN!!!
Draw
the CD label guides:
Measure an inkjet label for the required size of the inner and outer circles
in the upper left corner of the page. Also measure the distance to the top and
left edges of the paper.
Using Freehand, create a new file; view and set the ruler to inches. In
Page Setup (File menu), set the document to Portrait; format for the printer
you intend to use; and paper size for US letter.
Draw
the
outer
circle
(hold
shift
key
to keep round) and
enter
the dimensions
in the Object Inspector. Repeat above for the inner circle. Use the align tools
in the Align Panel. Group
the
two
circles
and postion them the measured distance from the top and left edge of the paper
(use the ruler);
click
the
Guides
Layer
in the Layers Panel.
Lock the Guides Layer and save your page as a Template from
the File Menu. Name the template "cd_label.ft10" on your disk
in a folder called "jewel_case."
Use
your template to design the label artwork:
Use any graphics/fonts
you wish, but don't spent a lot of time. Remember that Freehand is a vector program
and does not support transparency! Save as "print_cd_label.ft10" on
your disk in a folder called "jewel_case." Print on the
laserjet to check for fit against the actual label before you use it in the
color inkjet. Make sure
all layers--including Guides--that you do not wish to print are dragged below
the print line in the Layers Panel.
Use separate
layers in FreeHand for your logo, name, playlist, additional graphics,
etc. LOCK EACH LAYER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
For
maximum points, I will be looking for the following anywhere
on either the cover, tray, or label: demonstration of understanding
drawing techniques, correct playlist/time, your name, and graphics
which demonstrate an understanding of resolution.
Of
course, creativity will be generously
rewarded.
Don't spend
too much time--there are other, more interesting assignments ahead!
PRINTING
YOU MUST PRINT
IN PORTRAIT ORIENTATION.
Please
read Trouble
printing with OS X?
PLEASE "TEST
PRINT" YOUR LABEL ON PLAIN PAPER --ON A LASER PRINTER (NO COLOR),
TO SEE IF IT LINES UP CORRECTLY WITH THE LABEL BEFORE YOU
PRINT IN COLOR ON THE DESKJET PRINTER.
