Study Guide Test #1

History 111

Prof. Addison

These represent a good model of what you will find on the exam, although I reserve the right to amend and/or modify the questions to a more specific focus.

The exam will consist of a set of ten vocabulary terms drawn from your text and from lecture.  You will pick five of these terms and write one paragraph per term that identifies  the definition, significance, and historical context of each term.  This represents 25% of your exam.

After your ID’s, you will move on to do EITHER the multiple choice (approximately 40 questions) OR the essay section.  In the essay, you will pick ONE of the three questions selected, more or less, from the following 12.

1.         Age of Exploration:  What are the “push” factors that spur on out-migration?  Which areas are most affected?  How receptive are the reciprocal societies to new             encounters?

2.         What are the key political/religious events occurring in each of the geographic areas we’ve examined ca. 1500?  What are the far-reaching effects on other areas?

3.         What are the effects of the wars of religion in Europe and their connections to colonization and trade?

4.         What kind of technologic transferences are manifested from the linkage between civilizations?  How does this in turn affect each society’s cultural values?

5.         By what terms can “progress” be discussed in the period between the 15-17th centuries? Who is the most progressive in the world, and why?

6.         Using your primary text readings, discuss the perceptions of the “Other” as the world became connected.  In what sense are these encounters positive or    negative?

7.         Why is politics during the 15-18th century dominated by Dynasties and Empires?  Why and where does this change?

8.         In the Western World during the 16-18th centuries, the world shifted from being religiously dominated to being focused on the secular, political realm.   How does      this compare with the Near East and Asia in its various geographic       connections?

9.         What are the major forms of connection to/from Africa by other areas in this time?  Why was Africa largely intersected at the peripheral edges, rather than the    interior?

10.       What constitutes a “golden age” as we’ve talked about in several different civilizations?  What accounts for the rise and fall of these eras?

11.       What crucial factors are in place that make this period a global economy?  How does this form an integral concept of the world? Does the incorporation of the             Americas change this concept?

12.       Examine the intellectual developments in Asia, Central Asia/Near East,  the Americas and Europe between 15-18th centuries.  Is the Scientific Revolution-         Enlightenment in Europe really so unique?  What is comparable?
