Lampert uses several terms with which you may not be familiar in the context of a math classroom.  Three such terms that are key to her article are:

 

1)  discourse  (and community of discourse)  (Meredith, Jonathan, Ceci, Jaspreet, Jeea)

 

2)  participation structure  (Nick, Susan, Armine, Yutaka, Joseph)

 

3)  negotiation (Polly, Tiffany, Selena, Roxanne, Sheree)

 

For the term assigned to you (see above):

á          pay special attention to its appearances as you read the article

á          prepare a user-friendly explanation of what this term means in the context of a math classroom

á          identify a few examples from LampertÕs article that clarify your termÕs meaning

 

You will use these notes to help you explain your term in a ÒJigsawÓ activity next week, but they will not be collected.
