SED 535  Contemporary Mathematics Teaching      Assignment         Due: October 7, 2008

Read most carefully:

Crowley, M. L. (1987). The van Hiele model of the development of geometric thought. In M. M. Lindquist & A. P. Shulte (Eds.), Learning and teaching geometry, K-12: 1987 Yearbook, (pp. 1-15). Reston, VA: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  (In reader)

Think about (no need to submit):

Does the van Hiele classification system seem to describe what you see in your students?  If so, at what levels do you recognize certain students?  Does this article help explain any problems youÕve had teaching geometric concepts?

Read, but OK to skim activities and examples:

NCTM, Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, geometry standards, pp. 41-43 and either pp. 232-239 (Grades 6-8) or pp. 308-318 (Grades 9-12).
