The ISSC-GGD is organized around an international and multi-disciplinary network of scholars and activists concerned with gender, globalization, and democratization. This network is open to all scholars and activists interested in the work of the programme. The activities of the programme are organized by a Chairperson and a Scientific Programme appointed by the Executive Committee of the General Assembly of the ISSC. In accordance with the ISSC Handbook, the term of office for the chairperson shall be four years (renewable), and for members of the Scientific Programme, two years, renewable once.

In 1998, the ISSC-GGD was recognized as a Scientific Programme. In December, 2003, the ISSC Executive Committee recommended that the ISSC-GGD become a Scientific Programme of the ISSC. The General Assembly of the ISSC will consider this recommendation at its XXV General Assembly meeting in Beijing, China in November 2004.
