New Dean Appointed

William Flores has been appointed dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, effective Aug. 1. In addition, he will have a concurrent tenured faculty appointment as professor in the Department of Political Science. He currently serves as associate dean of the School of Social Science at CSU, Fresno.

New Director of Academic Resources

Spero Bowman, current manager of Academic Resources for the School of Communication, Health and Human Services, has been appointed Director of Academic Resources for the university, effective June 1. He has over twenty-two years of experience in administration and fiscal management in both the public and private sectors, in addition to serving on many committees, special project task forces and other administrative assignments here.

Presidential Advisory Board

Non-academic staff members interested in serving on the Presidential Advisory Board on Nondiscrimination and Affirmative Action should their names to Jeanette Mann by Fri., July 19, at 5 pm in Building 13, Room 109, or mail drop 8208.

Correction

The time of the Honors Convocation was incorrectly reported in the inaugural edition of @csun.edu. The correct information is Tues., May 28, 5 pm at the University Club.

News Conference Postponed

The news conference scheduled last week to announce plans for building repair and the anticipated FEMA funding was postponed to accomodate a possible visit by White House officials. A new time and date will be announced as soon as information is available, possibly this week.

Preschool Progam

There is space available for children between the ages of 2 years-9 montsh and 3 years-9 months in the full-day Child Development/Family Relations LAB preschool program on campus, starting June 3. The hours are 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. The cost is $115 per week. The nationally accredited center includes part-time faculty lead teachers, low teacher-to-child ratios and lunches prepared by dietetics interns. LAB School is a teaching unit of the Family Environmental Sciences Department.

Dedication Ceremony

A dedication ceremony to honor the late Girair Nazarian will take place on Tues., June 4, at 1:30 pm at the northwest section of Science IV. A memorial tree has been planted at the site in memory of Nazarian who was a professor of Chemistry from 1961 to 1987.

Chianese to Read Poems

Robert Chianese (English) will read from his collection of poems, "Hall Canyon Suite," on June 8, 1996 at 7:30 pm in The Arcade Poetry Series at the Performance Studio, 34 North Palm Street, Ventura.

University Holiday and Closure Schedule

President Wilson has determined the university holiday and closure schedule for the 1996-97 academic year as indicated below. Please note that in accordance with this holiday and closure schedule, the University will be closed from Mon. Dec. 23 through Wed., Jan. 1, 1997 - reopening on Thurs., Jan. 2, 1997

Please note that there are an insufficient number of holidays to cover all the days of the closure. Specifically, on Mon., Dec. 30 and Tues., Dec. 31, 1996, the campus will be closed, but we will not be observing a holiday. As a result, pursuant to system policy and collective bargaining agreements, employees will need to charge thier accrued vacation or personal holiday, or take a leave of absence without pay to cover those days. Employees elligible for overtime may also use compensatory time off (CTO) to cover Dec. 30 and 31. A summary sheet detailing how various groups of employees are affected by the campus closure has been directed to all heads of administrative units. All employees should check with their supervisors to establish a plan to cover these two days of closure.

Monthly rate employees are entitled to the paid holidays on the day they are observed on campus unless their are in a non-pay status on the holiday, or they are required to work to perform necessary services. Hourly employees are eligible for prorated holiday pay pursuant to the table provided to all departments by memo dated Dec. 13, 1995. This memo, entitled "Holiday Compensation Issues," is retained in Section I - Attendance and Leave Procedures - of your Standard Operating Procedures manual. Employees who are required to work on a holiday will receive holiday compensation or compensatory time off. The holidays listed below are in addition to the personal holiday which every employee received each Jan. 1, and which much be used before Dec. 31 of that year. Part-time employees and hourly employees are entitled to a personal holiday on a prorated basis. The University will be closed on the holidays and campus closure days listed below. Essential services, such as campus security, will be maintained on all the days of the closure. If you have questions, please call the Office of Human Resource Services, x2118.

Our Deepest Sympathy

The campus extends its sympathy to the family of retired professor Henry Klostergaard, who passes away May 19. He began teaching here in 1959 and served variously as chair of the original Division of Science and Mathematics, Department of Physical Science, and Department of Chemistry.
