New President's Aide
Joan O'Brien joins the Office of the President as the president's aide Mon., Dec. 18.
President Wilson asks that you join her in welcoming Joan to her new position.
Joan has extensive knowledge of the university and on-campus managerial and
administrative experience. Employed here since 1990 in a variety of positions, she most
recently was manager of administrative services in Physical Plant Management.

Family Holiday Events at Performing Arts Center
Two events for the entire family will take place this coming week at the USU's new
Performing Arts Center. The Theatre Arts Festival for Youth presents "A Christmas Carol"
Tues., Dec. 12, and Wed., Dec. 13, at 7:30 pm. Information and tickets are available by
calling 818/998-2339. The West Valley Ballet Company presents the "Nutcracker" ballet
on Sat., Dec. 16, at 2 pm and 7 pm and on Sun., Dec. 17, at 2 pm. Tickets for "Nutcracker"

Executive Fellowship Program
The State of California's Executive Fellowship Program provides recent graduates and
mid-career applicants of all backgrounds and academic disciplines a unique opportunity
to gain a deeper understanding of California governmental processes and executive
offices. Fellows are university employees and are awarded a monthly stipend of $1638.
Fifteen fellowships are awarded each June for the following academic year.

1996-97 Faculty Research Competition
The Research and Grants Committee announces the 1996-97 competition for research,
scholarship, and creative activity awards. All faculty are eligible to apply in one of the
following categories: mini grants up to $5000, summer stipends, or three units of
reassigned time. The deadline for submitting applications is Fri., March 15, at 5 pm. A
portion of available funds will be designated for awards to faculty hired since 1993-94.

All University Conference on General Education
The Faculty Senate and the General Education Steering Committee will host the All
University Conference on General Education on Thu., Jan. 25. All faculty, students, staff,
and administrators are urged to attend this important meeting.
The conference addresses the final stages of general education renewal. The purpose
of the conference is to arrive at a university-wide consensus for a G.E. model that
addresses the following changes:
- Development and Integration of Basic Fundamental/Foundational Skills
- Intellectual Integration of General Education
- Governance, Coordination, and Assessment of General Education
- Size of General Education
- Faculty Development
- Insuring a Curriculum of Inclusion
General Education Bulletin #7, which focuses on these challenges and alternative
models and solutions, will be distributed to conference participants in early January. It
will also be available on the World Wide Web with General Education Bulletins #1-6
(http://www.csun.edu/~hfaas004) or from the Faculty Senate Office.

Faculty Mentor Training Program
The deadline to apply for the Faculty Mentor Training Program is Fri, Dec. 15.
Selected interns will receive three units of release time during the spring
semester. Interested faculty should contact their department chairs
and school deans. The program is coordinated by the Advising Resource
Center/EOP.

Used Oil Recycling
A new city program has been implemented for those of you who change your own oil -
"Used Oil Recycling." The next event in the area is on Saturday,
December 16, LA Valley College, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Toys for Tots Drive
A Toys for Tots Drive will take place Sat., Dec. 16, at 7 pm at the Cal State Northridge vs.
Northeastern Illinois basketball game in the Matadome. For each paid admission plus an
unwrapped new toy valued at $10 or more, each person will receive two general
admissions tickets to a "double header" athletic event on Jan. 6: women's basketball
vs. Navy and men's basketball vs. University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Toys will be
presented to the U.S. Marine Corps, sponsors of Toys for Tots, during half time.
People unable to attend the Dec. 16 game can leave toys in the Child Development or
Athletic Department Offices. The drive is sponsored by the CSUN Child Development Club
in collaboration with Cal State Northridge Intercollegiate Athletics.

Opera Workshop
The Music Department's Opera Workshop will present an evening of opera scenes on
Tues., Dec. 12, at 8 pm in the Recital Hall. The voice students of David Scott will perform
scenes from many popular operas in duets, trios, and small ensembles. Admission is free.

Instructional Improvement Grants
Application guidelines and proposal forms for the 1996-97 Judge Julian Beck
Instructional Improvement Projects are available in the Office of Graduate Studies.
Recipients can receive up to $5000 for their projects, which can be in the following
categories: promoting student learning through non-traditional methods of teaching
and learning in general education and the academic disciplines, classroom research and
assessment, on-campus seminars and conferences, and innovative uses of technology
for improving instruction. The submission deadline is Mon., Feb. 19.

Christmas Break Parking
Parking enforcement will remain in effect through the Christmas break until Jan. 2. Pay
parking in Lot M will remain in effect during that period. Parking regulations for the

Payroll Warrants
Payroll warrants for the month of December will be issued to individuals on Fri., Dec. 29,
between 8:30 am and noon at Cash Management in the Education Administration
Building in the Business/Education complex at Vincennes and Etiwanda. A photo ID will
be required to pick up the warrant. If you have someone else pick up your check, you
must provide them a note of authorization for check pick-up and provide your social
security number. A photo ID of the authorized photo will also be required. Warrants not
distributed on Dec. 29 will be distributed to the departments as usual on Tue., Jan. 2.

UIB Schedule
The final UIB of the fall semester will come out Mon., Dec. 18. The deadline for it is Thu.,
Dec. 14, at noon. The first UIB of the spring semester will appear Mon., Jan. 22. The
