FOR RELEASE:
Aug. 10, 1999
Three years ago, Cal State Northridge became the largest team to participate in the Los Angeles AIDS Walk with more than 650 walkers. Team CSUN still held the record last year with more than 1,000 participants that earned them a place in the top 10 for most contributions raised - $22,131 - without any matching gift programs.
"This is our biggest year ever. I'm so proud to be part of this enormous success," said Amy Reichbach, coordinator of the CSUN Team. "We are hoping to see between 1,000 and 1,200 walkers representing the Cal State Northridge community."
CSUN Interim President Louanne Kennedy, who will be walking Oct. 17, said she is proud of the university's participation in LA's AIDS Walk.
"Over the past several years, Cal State Northridge has become a major presence at the Los Angeles AIDS Walk, winning recognition for its contributions to this charitable event," she said. "The increased participation from members of the campus community underscores the commitment to service and caring that exists at the university. I'm excited about this year's event and hope that faculty, staff, students, alumni and the campus community will join me in continuing the university's tradition of participating in the walk."
Reichbach said Cal State Northridge has received generous support from local businesses that have donated food for the walkers, prizes for top fundraisers and buses to take walkers from campus to Paramount Studios.
Proceeds from the AIDS Walk will benefit AIDS Project Los Angeles and will be used to provide food, shelter and medical services to men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS. APLA also works to reduce incidence of HIV infection through education programs and advocating for fair and effective public policies, since it was first founded in 1982.
There are no fees to join the AIDS Walk; however, pre-registration is required. People donating $5 and above will receive a free shirt. For more information about Team CSUN AIDS Walk, call Amy Reichbach at (818) 677-3683.
