The week-long program, which takes place on Aug. 15-20, will start with a tour of San Fernando-based Precision Dynamics, a manufacturing company of disposable medical devices and close with student teams presenting their fictitious plans to buy out the company to a panel of acting board members.
Throughout the week, the students will hear inspirational lectures, participate in discussion groups, work in computer labs, observe presentations, tour McDonald's Corporation and PricewaterhouseCoopers and work on their case study.
"At Precision Dynamics, we like to play an active role in the community," said Paresh Davda, vice president finance/CFO. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to support ACAP, which promotes career awareness of accounting opportunities to our future business leaders."
ACAP began in 1980 in response to the small proportion of minorities entering the accounting field. ACAP awards up to 100 scholarships annually to local high school students. The money covers room and board in university dorms for a week, tuition, books, supplies and transportation.
In addition, ACAP provides internship opportunities, mentoring and guidance counseling that introduces its participants to accounting, finance, economics and management through a carefully designed curriculum that includes guests from industry, academia and government.
"ACAP is changing the lives of minority students who have not had any exposure to the accounting profession prior to this program," said Ida E. Yarbrough, CPA and ACAP executive director.
She said ACAP's goals include reaching minority high school students with latent potential, encouraging students of targeted minority groups to acquire college-level educational background, promoting career awareness through minority role models and involving accounting professionals, career guidance counselors and parents in volunteer efforts.
