A glimpse of Japanese history will be on display in two Cal State Northridge Art Gallery exhibits, "Akiko Arita: Noto, Exploring My Native Culture in Japan," and "Japanese Kimonos: Traditional Motifs," from Aug. 24 through Sept. 26.
The first exhibit will feature a series of photographs that reveal life in the Noto area of the Ishikawa prefecture in Japan. The photographs, compiled by Arita, tell the values of her parent's generation with awareness to traditional social and economic system changes and her ties to family, land, place and community.
The second exhibit will display more than 50 kimonos, the traditional costume for both men and women and still worn today for social and ceremonial events in Japan. The display will include kimonos that reflect different seasons, formal occasions and social standing.
A reception for both events will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Akiko will present a gallery talk on Sept. 14 from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by a talk by CSUN professor Juliann Wolfgram on the kimono exhibit at 3 p.m.
Both the reception and gallery talks will be held in the Art Gallery, located on the south side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
The exhibit is sponsored by All Nippon Airways and the Japan Foundation and Language Center in Los Angeles.
