Conference Explores Eroticism and the First Amendment

The issues surrounding pornography and the First Amendment will be explored at an international conference this August hosted by Cal State Northridge's Center for Sex Research and the Free Speech Coalition, the trade association of the adult entertainment industry.

The "World Pornography Conference: Eroticism and the First Amendment" will take place from Aug. 6-9 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City.

The conference will include members of the adult entertainment industry, First Amendment lawyers and academics, and will cover such topics as the real "Boogie Nights," interactive sex, Victorian pornography and X-rated comics.

Among those taking part will be lawyers for Hustler, Penthouse, Playboy magazines as well as attorneys involved in the first successful challenge to the 1996 Communications Decency Act. The curator of the Kinsey Institute will discuss the institute's battle with the U.S. Customs Department over 31 pictures.

Panelists from around the world, including Russia, Canada and South Africa, will discuss pornography in their countries. Producers, directors and stars in the adult entertainment industry will also discuss their views of their work.

Registration for the conference is $175, $100 for California State University or University of California students. For more information, call CSUN's Center for Sex Research at (818) 677-3844 or visit the web site at http://www.csun.edu/~sr2022.
