City Helps CSUN Add Drama to Local Teens' Summer

With the help of a generous grant of nearly $6,000 from the city of Los Angeles, Cal State Northridge is bringing some drama to the lives of 10 economically disadvantaged youths this summer.

The grant, from the city's Cultural Affairs Department, pays the way for the teenagers to take part in the university's annual Teen-Age Drama Workshop, a six-week summer program of classes and theatrical productions.

"The workshop is self-supporting and many disadvantaged families cannot afford the tuition," said Jeffrey Levy, executive director of the program. "The gift from the Cultural Affairs Department is helping us broaden our outreach so we can provide acting, movement and voice classes to deserving students who might not otherwise afford them."

Tuition for the workshop is $750 per participant. A total of 65 teenagers are taking part in the workshop.

The workshop began June 23 and will continue through August 2 with morning classes and afternoon rehearsals. Participants will take part in two full theatrical productions.

The first, "Mazel & Schlimazel," by Doug Kaback, is based on a bet between two spirits over who is more powerful. Production dates and times are 7 p.m. on July 18 and Aug. 1; at 11 a.m. on July 19 and 26 and Aug. 2; and 2 p.m. on July 24, 25 and 31. It will take place in the Little Theatre in the Speech-Drama Building on the southwest corner of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge

The second production is "Little Red Riding Wolf," written by Walker Ladd and Jeffrey Levy with music by Tony Karra, which explores the deeper meaning behind the well-known fairytale and displays a new look at the wolf. Dates and times for "Little Red Riding Wolf" are 7 p.m. on July 25 and Aug. 1; 11 a.m. on July 26 and Aug. 1 and 2; and 2 p.m. on July 31. The musical will be performed in the Campus Theatre, also in the Speech-Drama Building.

Tickets are available from the Student Union Ticket Office at (818) 677-2488 and at the door.

The Teen-Age Drama Workshop is sponsored by the university's Department of Theatre and Bureau of Arts Research and Development.

It is a six-week theater workshop for youths between the ages of 12 and 18 that combines daily instruction to focus on developing the dramatic tools of the body, voice and mind. The workshop is led by CSUN faculty, local secondary school drama teachers and professional actors, directors and designers currently working in Los Angeles theater.
