Public Invited to Take Part in Charter Reform Hearing

Cal State Northridge invites the community to take part in the first of a series of public hearings on charter reform on Wednesday, May 28, at Valley College.

The university joins the Daily News and Los Angeles' Charter Reform Commission in co-hosting the event, which will examine such issues as how to make City Hall more responsive to the public and how much power the mayor and city council should have.

The public hearing will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in Monarch Hall at Valley College, 5800 Fulton Avenue in Van Nuys.

"We are delighted that Cal State Northridge is co-hosting our first public hearing, and we thank President Blenda Wilson for her outstanding support," said Raphael Sonenshein, executive director of the commission. "Charter reform is a magnificent opportunity for community education, and the involvement of CSUN brings its great resources to bear in this very large task."

Northridge President Blenda J. Wilson said the charter reform process is an opportunity for the people of Los Angeles "to will our future."

"'Some problems are so difficult they can't be solved in a million years -- unless someone thinks about them for five minutes,'" said Wilson, quoting H.L. Mencken.

"The charter reform process is an opportunity for the people of Los Angeles to think about problems and to craft solutions; it is an opportunity for us as a city to 'will our future' by making deliberate choices," Wilson said.

The Charter Reform Commission was established last fall by the City Council. Its 21 volunteer members were appointed by the City Council, the Council President, the City Attorney and the City Controller.

The commission's task is to present recommendations for Charter revision to the City Council, which will then decide on measures to be placed before the voters. No Charter change can occur without voter approval.
