CSUN Launches New Animation Program
with Summer Workshop

Continuing its new initiative to prepare students for careers in the entertainment industry, Cal State Northridge is launching a new animation program this summer.

The university will kick off its new program in July with a four-week, intensive summer workshop. This fall CSUN's Art Department will add an animation program to its curriculum.

The Summer Animation Experience will offer beginning, intermediate and advanced art students an opportunity learn the intricacies of animation by working with professional animators.

The workshop and animation will include figure drawing, color theory, painting, puppetry, computer art, sculpture and video.

"We're excited about the workshop and the program because there is a lot of opportunity out there for people who have animation skills,' said art department chair Joe Lewis.

"Animation is a really broad area," Lewis said. "It's not just drawing and painting, it's acting, poetry, sculpting, all kinds of things with all kinds of opportunities in such things as movies, television, games, not just plain animation."

Guest speakers and lecturers for both the summer workshop and animation program will include Don Hahn, a Northridge alum and producer of such Disney hits as "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King," as well as artists and producers from Warner Bros. and Hanna- Barbera.

Lewis said the summer workshop is a "crash course in animation," while the fall program will cover all aspects of the profession, offering professionals an opportunity to brush up on the skills needed in an evolving and growing field.

Lewis said entertainment industry employers are continually looking for skilled animators and a diverse workforce, and the university can fill those needs.

The animation program is part of the university's new Entertainment Industry Institute aimed at establishing a strong alliance with the Hollywood community by developing curricula and degree programs, coordinating internships, providing on-site classes in studios and supporting research on the entertainment industry.

The institute was created through a collaboration of the College of Arts, Media and Communication, the College of Business Administration and Economics and the College of Engineering and Computer Science with a goal of giving students a well-rounded education.

The fee for the summer workshop is $425. Limited financial aid is available. The workshop is open to high school and university students. Deadline for registration is July 3.

For more information about the summer workshop or the animation program which will start this fall, call the Art Department at (818) 677-2242.
