Bay Area Artist Premieres Three New Installations
at Cal State Northridge Art Galleries

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Aug. 4, 2004) - Bay Area artist Su-Chen Hung premieres three new installations in her exhibition, "The Red Sea Series," opening on Monday, Aug. 23 at Cal State Northridge's Art Galleries.

The individual installations utilize various objects highlighted by red thread overlays and other color transformations. In Chinese culture, red is associated with luck and good blessings.

Thematically, the installations refer to the artist's dual, but ambiguous, patrimonies in Taiwan and the United States. They also focus on the impact ancestral memories have on one's own identity and on the physical environment as an expression of culture and time.

Hung was born in Taiwan and received a university degree in sociology there. She moved to the United States in 1984, earning both a bachelor's and master's in fine arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. She works in a variety of media, including photography, film, performance and site-specific installations.

Hung has exhibited in various cities across the United States as well as in Europe and Japan. She has been awarded several grants including one from the National Endowment for the Arts. She also has received a number of public art commissions, most recently in San Francisco and Phoenix, Ariz. Hung will give a free gallery lecture about her exhibition on Monday, Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. in the galleries.

Gallery hours are from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information about the exhibit, call the Art Galleries at (818) 677-2156 or visit their Web site at /www.csun.edu/artgalleries/.
