LA Press Club Honors KCSN with Two Trophies

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., June 17, 2004) -- For the third straight month, Cal State Northridge's acclaimed public radio station, KCSN-88.5 FM, has been recognized for the talents of its news division, this time by the Los Angeles Press Club.

KCSN received two awards from the Press Club -- "First Place for Investigative Series" for a piece by news director Keith Goldstein on domestic violence and "Second Place for a Newscast over 15 Minutes" for the station's "The Evening Update" broadcast.

In awarding first place honors to the story on domestic violence, the Press Club judges called it "a powerful piece of journalism and radio at its best."

They went on to say, "The personal stories from the real victims give this radio series extreme authenticity. It's hard to imagine how much effort went into putting this together. Excellent work and a deserving winner."

Only last month, the station's news team received three regional "Edward R. Murrow Awards," including one for overall excellence, from the Radio and Television News Directors Association. In April, the team took home four first place awards from the Associated Press Television-Radio Association.

The news division won two "Golden Mikes" and a special merit award from the Radio-Television News Association of Southern California in January.

The station's news division is made up of only one full-time employee, Goldstein, and students majoring in broadcast journalism.

KCSN News has won more than 400 awards over the years in national and state competitions against professional broadcasters and other university students.

There are more than 400 students from a variety of backgrounds enrolled in Cal State Northridge's journalism program, which offers training in several fields -- newspapers, radio and television broadcasting, on-line media, magazines, public relations and photojournalism.

CSUN's Department of Journalism is one of only 100 accredited programs in the Western Hemisphere, and is considered by professionals in the field as one of the top departments in the nation.
