Cal State Northridge Invites Families to Day of Nutrition Fun

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., July 7, 2004) -- Cal State Northridge's Marilyn Magaram Center invites families and children to have some fun and learn about eating healthy at the same time.

"Albertsons Passport to F.U.N. (Fitness and Understanding Nutrition)" is slated to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, at the Albertsons supermarket at 7227 Van Nuys Blvd. in Van Nuys.

On that day, children will be able to visit stations set up throughout the store where they can learn about vitamins and nutrients, and collect stamps to put on their personalized "passports." Children with completed "passports" will be eligible to win prizes via a raffle.

An obstacle course and a bounce house will be set up outside for children to promote physical activity. KIIS FM will supply music for the event.

"Obesity is a rapidly growing problem in this country," said Claudia Patino, administrative assistant for the Marilyn Magaram Center and Jessica Zakarian, office manager of the department. "Our goal is to promote childhood obesity awareness by educating children and their families about the importance of healthy eating."

The event is sponsored by Northeast Valley Family YMCA, KCET, Assembly member Lloyd E. Levine, 5-A-Day Power-play, LA County Department of Health Services' public health and physical activity departments, and the Women, Infant and Children program of Northeast Valley Health Corporation.

"(This event) is an effort to have fun with the kids," Patino said. "But hopefully they will take home a little bit of a lesson. Childhood obesity is a huge problem and not many people are aware of it."
