CSUN Planetarium to Explore Summer Skies in July
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., June 24, 2004) -- The magic of a summer night will make its way into the July schedule of Cal State Northridge's Bianchi Planetarium.
The planetarium is offering two shows every Friday night next month, beginning July 9, to give the public an opportunity to view different aspects of the evening skies.
Each Friday from 6 to 7 p.m., the first presentation will be an examination of the night sky. The "Summer Sky Show" offers a view of the stars, constellation and planets visible during the summer time.
The second presentations, each beginning at 7 p.m., are as follows:
- July 9 -- "Voyager Encounters," in which narrator Patrick Stewart shares the results of Voyager 1 and 2's visits to our solar system's outer planets and their moons.
- July 16 -- "The Search for Life in the Universe," in which narrator Leonard Nimoy poses the question "Are we alone in the universe?" The show explores attempts by humans to establish contact with extraterrestrial civilizations.
- July 23 -- "Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays: The Mystery of Nature's Most Powerful Particle Accelerates," in which Cal Tech professor Theresa Lynn will explain what particle accelerates are as well as a joint project in which university students will join with high school and middle school students from the Los Angeles area in studying ultra high energy cosmic rays.
- July 30 -- "Rings of Saturn," in which Linda J. Spilker, a Cassini deputy project scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will talk about what the Cassini mission has learned from the space ship's visit to Saturn.
Student admission for planetarium shows is $3 for one show and $5 for both shows. General admission is $5 for one show and $8 for both shows.
