CSUN Planetarium to Explore Summer Skies in August
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Aug. 2, 2004) -- The magic of a summer night has made its way into the August schedule of Cal State Northridge's Bianchi Planetarium.
The planetarium is offering two shows every Friday night in August to give the public an opportunity to view different aspects of the evening skies.
Each Friday from 6 to 7 p.m., the first presentation will be an examination of the night sky. The "Summer Sky Show" offers a view of the stars, constellations and planets visible during the summer time.
The second presentations, each beginning at 7 p.m., are as follows:
- Aug. 6 -- "The Voyager Encounters," in which narrator Patrick Stewart shares the results of Voyager 1 and 2's visits to our solar systemÕs outer planets and their moons.
- Aug. 13 -- "Virtual Tour of San Fernando Observatory," provides an overview description of the kind of research and activities done at the observatory, which is located in Sylmar and operated by the university.
- Aug. 20 -- "Keck Interferometer: Planet Hunting and Other Astrophysics Done with High Resolution Imaging," in which Andrew J. Booth, head of the control system development for the Keck Interferometer for JPL, will describe his work on building and using the Keck Interferometer to link the two biggest telescopes in the world -- the twin 10m Keck Telescopes atop Mount Kea in Hawaii.
- Aug. 27 -- "The Search for Life in the Universe," in which narrator Leonard Nimoy poses the question "Are we alone in the universe?" The show explores attempts by humans to establish contact with extraterrestrial civilizations.
Student admission for planetarium shows is $3 for one show and $5 for both shows. General admission is $5 for one show and $8 for both shows.
