CSUN Hosts Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Parenting Classes
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., July 1, 2004) -- Cal State Northridge invites the community to attend a summer lecture series on parenting for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
The six-week parenting class, "Power Parenting: Focusing on ADHD," will provide parents with the basic understanding of the ADHD-associated behavioral problems that make parenting much more challenging.
Slated for Tuesdays beginning July 6 through Aug. 10, the series will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in the university's Noski Auditorium located on the west side of campus on the corner of N. University Drive
and Etiwanda Avenue in Northridge. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m.
"CSUN is hosting this event because we see an urgent need to provide quality parent education seminars for families in the community and to begin building collaborative partnerships with individuals, agencies and organizations in the community that focus on the mental health aspect of families and their children with special needs," said Ivor Weiner special education professor and event co-coordinator.
"In order to serve families and the general community, we need to focus on the family as a whole," Weiner said. "This type of collaboration assists us in serving families in a meaningful way."
The parenting classes cover all one needs to know when parenting children with ADHD, said Sharon Pollock, pediatrician and event co-coordinator.
"It's a different type of parenting," she said.
Experts will discuss the basics of ADHD, parental roles and challenges throughout their child's life, relationship dynamics in families, how to tackle the child's education, providing positive behavior support, and how to build resilience, reliability and better times into family life.
"No bookÉadequately prepares or helps to teach us how to parent our ADHD kids," Pollock said.
The classes cost $25 per session or $125 for all six sessions. Walk-ins are welcome on the day of the session.
To park, visit the kiosk on Prairie Street near Darby Avenue. Parking attendants will direct guests to the parking lot. Parking costs $4.
