CSUN to Celebrate Start of New School Year

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Aug. 22, 2003) - Cal State Northridge is celebrating the start of the new school year by hosting a series of events next week to welcome students onto the campus.

The highlight of the week will be the annual "Welcome Celebration" hosted by Northridge President Jolene Koester on Wednesday, Aug. 27, in front of the Student Services Building on the west side of the campus.

The celebration will take place from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 5:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. Students will get a chance to meet Koester and other university officials as well as enjoy a free picnic and live entertainment.

Other events include:

  • Monday, Aug. 25 - Matador Madness. The university's bookstore, located on the south side of the campus, will remain open after regular hours to give students a chance to purchase their books. There will be free food, live entertainment and door prizes.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 26 - Representatives from a variety of student clubs and organizations will line Magnolia Walk in front of the Student Services Building, providing students an opportunity to get involved in campus life.
  • Thursday, Aug. 28 - The University Student Union will host a live salsa band, "La Combinacion," at noon in its Court of Community on the east side of the campus. Students will also receive complimentary horchata, salsa and taquitos. A craft corner also will be set up so participants can make their own necklaces, bracelets and anklets.
California State University, Northridge has more than 33,000 full- and part-time students and offers 61 bachelor's and 42 master's degrees as well as 28 education credential programs. Founded in 1958, it is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley and the fourth largest in the 23-campus CSU system. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges recently said CSUN "stands as a model to other public urban institutions of higher education."
