CSUN Named Among Top Universities for Minority Students

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., July 11, 2003) - Cal State Northridge has been rated 14th in the nation in Black Issues in Higher Education's annual ranking of the top 100 colleges for minority students.

The magazine's June 5 issue is dedicated to ranking the nation's colleges and universities on how well they serve students of color based on data provided by the U.S. Department of Education.

Cal State Northridge ranked 14th in the nation in the total baccalaureate degrees conferred to minorities in the academic year 2001-2002. CSUN awarded a total of 1,958 bachelor's degrees to students of color, 732 to men and 1,226 to women. That accounted for 41 percent of the university's undergraduate degrees that year.

"We're honored to be recognized for our continuing efforts to provide a quality educational experience to a diverse community," said Louanne Kennedy, CSUN's provost and vice president for academic affairs. "Cal State Northridge takes pride in being honored by Black Issues for our accomplishments."

Hispanic Outlook in High Education recently ranked Cal State Northridge 10th in a national list of colleges and universities that conferred the most bachelor's degrees upon Hispanics using information provided by the National Center for Education Statistics.

According to Black Issues' rankings, Northridge was eighth in the nation in bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics, 28th in degrees awarded to Asian Americans, 73rd in degrees awarded to American Indians, and 90th in degrees awarded to African Americans.

The university ranked second in the nation in bachelor's degrees awarded to African Americans in area/ethnic studies, fifth in the nation in bachelor degrees awarded to Hispanics in area/ethnic studies, and fifth in the nation in bachelor's degrees in area/ethnic studies to minorities overall.

CSUN was seventh in the nation in the number of bachelor's degrees awarded to minorities in education, 12th in the nation in degrees awarded minorities in the social sciences and history, 25th in the nation in degrees awarded to minorities in business, and 26th in degrees awarded to minorities in mathematics.

Northridge was third in the nation in bachelor's degrees in social sciences and history, ninth in education, 12th in English language and letters, 16th in business and 20th in mathematics in bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics.

CSUN also ranked fifth in the nation in bachelor's degrees in education awarded to Asian Americans.

California State University, Northridge has more than 31,500 full- and part-time students and offers 61 bachelor's and 42 master's degrees as well as 28 education credential programs. Founded in 1958, it is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley and the fourth largest in the 23-campus CSU system. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges recently said CSUN "stands as a model to other public urban institutions of higher education."
