CSUN's First Woman Police Chief to be Sworn In

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Aug. 15, 2003) - Anne P. Glavin, Cal State Northridge's director of public safety, will be officially sworn in as the university's first female chief of police during a special ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 21.

Northridge President Jolene Koester will swear in Glavin to her new post at 11 a.m. at the Department of Public Safety's offices on the east side of the campus at 9757 Zelzah Ave.

"I am very pleased and proud to be officially sworn in as CSUN Chief of Police," Glavin said. "This is an exciting time to be at this university and I am delighted to be in the leadership position of the Department of Public Safety as we enhance our professional skills and find new ways to provide a broader range of services to the community we serve. I am thrilled to work with my department as we address the challenges ahead."

Among those expected to attend the ceremony are Los Angeles Police Department Commander Valentino Paniccia and Captain John Sherman of the Devonshire division as well as Chief Alan Kerstein of the Los Angeles Unified School District Police Department, California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Leland Tang and L.A.P.D. Captain Greg Myer, who worked closely with CSUN police on a speeding initiative to help reduce speeding around campus.

Police chiefs from sister CSU campuses are also expected to attend.

Glavin, who was former director of public safety and chief of police for 15 years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was appointed director of public safety in July of 2002. She recently received a "Glass Ceiling" award from the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives at their annual conference in Arizona.

Cal State Northridge's Department of Public Safety includes a 24-person police division of fully certified law enforcement officers, parking and transportation services and a student-staffed community service officer program. The department offers a wide variety of services, including motorcycle to bicycle patrol, crime prevention services and a detective division.
