Aquarium Brings Nemo's World to CSUN's Lab School

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., July 24, 2003) - Preschoolers and kindergartners in CSUN's Child and Family Studies Center's Lab School will get a chance to explore Nemo's world when members of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium visit next month.

The children will have an opportunity to ask questions about the undersea world that serves as the setting for the Disney summer hit, Finding Nemo, as well as have a chance to see what some of Nemo's friends are really like during the visit on Tuesday, Aug. 5.

"I think children are innately interested in sea creatures - anything that swims or comes from the ocean," said center director Barbara J. Hill. "I have never met a young child who was not interested in the sea in some fashion, be it sharks - for their mystery and scariness - or sea urchins, shells and all those kinds of things. Inviting the aquarium to the center just blends really well with the age group we work with."

The aquarium will give three presentations. The first will be at 9 a.m. with the kindergartners, followed with sessions at 10 and 11 a.m. with the preschoolers. The first half of each presentation will take place in the center's multipurpose room, followed by a visit to a special touch tank outside during the second half.

The school is located at 18330 Halsted St. in Northridge.

The Lab School serves preschool and kindergarten children. The school and the center are part of CSUN's Department of Family and Environmental Sciences and are dedicated to fostering a partnership with the child's family. The school also serves as a learning environment for CSUN students interested in working with children.
