CSUN Welcomes Students During the First Week of School
(NORTHRIDGE Calif., August 15, 2002) To celebrate the start of the new school year, Cal State Northridge is hosting a weeklong series of events later this month to welcome new and returning students to campus.
The week of Aug. 26 through Aug. 30 will feature a vendor fair and a variety of activities, including a fashion show, a hypnotist and an international student coffee hour.
The highlight of the week will be the Presidentıs annual "Welcome Picnic" on Thursday, Aug 29. The picnic will take place at two different times, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be food and live entertainment.
Other events include:
On Monday, Aug. 26 from 7 to 10 p.m., the bookstore will host "Matador Madness" and students will have the opportunity to purchase books after regular store hours. There will be free food, live entertainment, a fashion show, games, door prizes and a 25% discount on clothing and gift items;
- Hypnotist Jon Bouvier will try his craft on students in the Shoshone Room of the Satellite Student Union, 17950 Lassen St., on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m.
- On Wednesday, Aug. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., student clubs and organizations will be in the Sierra Quad, giving students an opportunity to get involved on campus.
- Jewish Student Life at CSUN will host a free barbecue at the Hillel Center at 17729 Plummer St. on Aug. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
- On Aug. 30, CSUNıs women volleyball will play Kent State at 11:30 a.m. and San Francisco at 7 p.m. in the Matadome.
- From noon to 2 p.m. on Aug. 30 on Magnolia Walk east of the Oviatt Library, will be an "International Student Coffee Hour." CSUNıs "Filipino-American Student Association" will perform, as will entertainers from different parts of the world.

California State University, Northridge has more than 31,500 full- and part-time students and offers 59 bachelorsı and 41 master's degrees. Founded in 1958, it is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley and the third largest in the 23-campus CSU system. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges recently said CSUN "stands as a model to other public urban institutions of higher education."
