Poster Symposium to be Held at CSUN
(NORTHRIDGE Calif., May 30, 2002) - More than 100 junior high and high school students from the San Fernando Valley and the rest of Los Angeles area will present posters on their research projects at Cal State Northridge, Saturday, June 1 at 10 a.m.
Students will display their work and will be available to answer questions about their projects in the first floor hallway of Science Building 2 in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
The studentsı teachers received their training in the National Science Foundation and Dwight D. Eisenhower Professional Development State Grant Program at Cal State Northridge.
"This program is of major importance in stimulating the interest of our future scientists in scientific research," said CSUN biology professor Steve Oppenheimer, who directs the program. "The future health, welfare and security of the U.S. depend on us producing some of the worldıs best scientists. This program starts studentsı interest in science very, very early."
Oppenheimer said the posters presented by the students attest to the successful classroom implementation of student research using scientific methods. Some of these students have also published their work in May 2002 issue of Journal of Student Research Abstracts.
The poster symposium is free and open to the public.
