CSUN Journalism Student Is One of Seven to be
Selected from a Nationwide Essay Contest

(NORTHRIDGE Calif., July 18, 2002) ­ Cal State Northridgeıs Kelly A. Duggan is one of seven journalism students nationwide to become a Jim Murray Memorial Foundationıs 2002 Scholar.

Duggan and other scholarship recipients will be honored at the fourth annual Jim Murray Memorial Gold Classic on Oct.14 at Lakeside Golf Club, 4500 W. Lakeside Dr. in Burbank.

"The department of journalism is honored to be included among those university programs invited to participate in the competition," said Cynthia Rawitch, chair of the journalism department. "We are doubly honored this year in having one of our students win a $5,000 scholarship. It confirms the strength of our program in educating future journalists. We are proud and grateful."

The scholarship winners were selected based on essays they submitted in a nationwide contest judged by Dave Barry of the Miami Herald; Bill Christine of the Los Angeles Times; Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post; Dave Kindred of The Sporting News; Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News; Dave Newhouse of the Oakland Tribune and Woody Paige of The Denver Post.

Jim Murray was the nationally recognized sports columnist who worked for the Los Angeles Times before his death in 1998.

Linda McCoy-Murray, president and founder of the Jim Murray Memorial Foundation established the foundation in 1999 to perpetuate her late husbandıs memory and his love and dedication to journalism.
