CSUN Professor to Spend Day Teaching Kids Speed

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., July 30, 2002) - Just how fast can you go? Cal State Northridge kinesiology professor Steven Loy and a team of students will be helping hundreds of young people find out the answer to that question on Saturday, Aug. 3, as they take part in The Home Depot's National KidsDay celebration.

They will be joined by former Los Angeles Dodger great Reggie Smith, Los Angeles Galaxy stars Sasha Victorine and Gavin Glinton and two-time U.S. Olympic Medal-winning hurdler Mark Crear and 1999 Track and Field World Champion gold medallist Jerome Davis at The Home Depot in Van Nuys for the "Higher-Faster-Stronger" youth fitness and sports program from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The store is located at 16800 Roscoe Blvd.

The program is designed to help kids run their fastest, jump their highest and throw and kick the farthest.

"The idea is to encourage kids to be active in sports and healthy activities," Loy said. "We'll be there to teach them how to increase their speed."

Loy said an obstacle course will be set up to test how fast the children can move. They will be given tips on how to increase their times and effectively use their bodies as well activities they can do at home.

In addition to CSUN's speed course, there will be clinics on baseball throwing and batting and soccer kicking and shooting. Autographs, gift bags and other prizes will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. For more information, call The Home Depot at (714) 940-3696.
