CSUN Student Recognized for Community Service Work

(NORTHRIDGE Calif. June 27, 2002) A Cal State Northridge business administration major was one of twenty-one students within the California State University system recently recognized for their outstanding service to the community.

Nancy Landa, who has worked with a variety of community agencies since her freshmen year at CSUN, was honored during the CSU Board of Trustees' meeting in April.

"Community service has always been an integral part of my learning experience, especially here at CSUN. It taught me about myself as I have grown as a person. I can't see myself without continuing to contribute to my community after I graduate and start my career," said Landa.

Landa is a member of CSUN's Volunteer Council board and has worked with the American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association, United Way, Los Angeles Housing Authority, Habitat for Humanity and Meeting Every Need with Dignity (MEND).

Every December, Landa works with MEND as a Volunteer Council member to help adopt a low-income family by raising approximately $1,200 to purchase food, warm clothes and toys for the family.

Landa says she is passionate about helping others and plans to go into the non-profit sector once she gets her degree.

"I want to focus more on technological aspects of society, especially now that technology is revolutionizing our economy and our daily lives," Landa said. "I feel that there is a need to educate our community and start programs to promote technological awareness, especially in communities that do not have access due to socio-economic factors."
