CSUN¹s TeenAge Drama Workshop Presents
"Summer Plays for Youth"

(NORTHRIDGE Calif., July 8, 2002) ­ Cal -State Northridge¹s 45th annual TeenAge Drama Workshop (TADW) will present "Summer Plays for Youth," a children¹s theatre production, from July 17 through Aug. 3.

The shows, The Wizard of Oz, Aladdin, Persephone and Meand the Ten Minute Play Festivalwill feature the talents of 88 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18, as well as the TADW¹s professional staff.

The performances will be held in Nordhoff Hall on the southeast side of campus, 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

Persephone and Medramatically depict the Greek myth of the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone who is abducted by Hades, King of the Underworld. The story of a modern teenage girl¹s relationship with her divorced mother parallels the ancient tale.

Persephone and Mewill be performed at 11 a.m. on July 24 and 27, at 2 p.m. on July 18 -­26 and 7p.m. on July 17, 20 and 25.

The Wizard of Oz>is the classic L. Frank Baum story of Dorothy and her dog Toto as they get carried away to the wonderful world of Munchkin land. Dorothy, along with her new friends, follows the yellow brick road to her magical destiny. Music from the 1939 MGM film is performed.

The Wizard of Ozwill be performed at 11 a.m. on July 20, 24, 26, 31 and Aug. 1 and 2, 2 p.m. on July 27 and at 7p.m. on July 19, 25 and 27.

Aladdinis an adaptation of the original Arabic tale written by Tamadhur AlAqeel translated by Husain Haddaway. This premiere production features authentic music and dance by a multi-cultural cast.

Aladdinwill be performed at 11 a.m. on July 26, 27, 31, August 1 through 3, at 2 p.m. on July 25 and at 7 p.m. on July 24, 26 and 27.

The Ten Minute Play Festivalfeatures fourteen original short works by TADW students. Comedy, pathos and teen angst are evocatively presented in two separate programs. Program A will be performed at 7 p.m. July 31 and Aug. 2. Program B will show at 7 p.m. on Aug. 1 and the 3.

The TeenAge Drama Workshop is a six-week summer program for students 12 through 18 years of age. The workshop combines four hours of daily instruction in acting, voice movement, musical theatre, technical theatre and improvisation with production programs that present live theatre to audiences in the San Fernando Valley.
