CSUN Named Among Top Universities for Minority Students

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., July 5, 2002) - Cal State Northridge has been rated 13th in the nation in Black Issues in Higher Education's annual ranking of the top colleges for minority students.

The magazine's June 20 issue is dedicated to ranking the nation's colleges and universities on how well they serve students of color.

Cal State Northridge ranked 13th in the nation in the total baccalaureate degrees conferred to minorities in the academic year 2000-2001. CSUN awarded a total of 1789 bachelor's degrees to students of color, 707 to men and 1082 to women. That accounted for nearly 41 percent of the university's graduates that year.

"We are honored to be recognized for our efforts in serving a diverse community," said Louanne Kennedy, CSUN's provost and vice president for academic affairs. "Cal State Northridge is proud to be able to provide a quality educational experience for everyone."

Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education recently ranked Cal State Northridge 11th in a national list of colleges and universities that conferred the most bachelor's degrees upon Hispanics using information provided by the National Center for Education Statistics.

Black Issues ranked institutions on its list according to information supplied by the U.S. Department of Education.

According to Black Issues rankings, Northridge was 10th in the nation in bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics across all disciplines, 27th degrees awarded to Asian Americans, 43rd in degrees awarded to American Indians and 108th in degrees awarded across all disciplines to African Americans.

Among the university's other rankings was fourth in the nation in bachelor's degrees in area ethnic group studies awarded African Americans, fifth in social science and history bachelor's degrees awarded Hispanics and sixth in bachelor's degrees in area ethnic group studies awarded Hispanics, education bachelor's degrees to Asian Americans and English master's degrees awarded Hispanics.

CSUN also ranked seventh in the nation in bachelor's degrees in mathematics and psychology, eighth in bachelor's degrees in education and tenth in English bachelor's degrees to Hispanics.

Northridge ranked 12th in master's degrees awarded to Asian Americans in English, 14th in bachelor's degrees awarded to Asian Americans in business, 17th in bachelor's degrees awarded Asian Americans in health sciences, 18th in bachelor's degrees awarded Hispanics in business, 19th in bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics in health sciences and 20th in bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics in biology and American Indians in English.

California State University, Northridge has more than 31,500 full- and part-time students and offers 63 bachelor's and 51 master's degrees. Founded in 1958, it is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley and the third largest in the 23-campus CSU system. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges recently said CSUN "stands as a model to other public urban institutions of higher education."
