CSUN Professors to Provide Week Full of Art
to Local Elementary School Kids

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Aug. 1, 2002) - Students from two local elementary schools have been invited to spend next week at Cal State Northridge exploring the world of art under the watchful eyes of university faculty and students.

Students from Coldwater Canyon and Winnetka Avenue elementary schools in the San Fernando Valley will be exposed to such things as art history, photography, ceramics, drawing, animation and computer graphics during a series of classes on Monday, Aug. 5, through Thursday, Aug. 8.

The first annual ArtWeek, sponsored by CSUN's art department, will culminate with a showcase Thursday featuring the students' work on display in one of the university's galleries.

"Our hope is for the kids to first enjoy art, learn the possibilities and wonders of the many facets of art, and ultimately make the connection between art and culture in our everyday lives," said David Moon, chair of the art department.

Moon said he realizes that many public schools, particularly those in low-income neighborhoods, have been forced to eliminate art from their curriculums because of budget constraints.

"Art is an integral part of society and we hope to expose these youngsters to it so they learn that beautiful things come out of creative people," he said.

Moon said this is the first year his department has ever sponsored ArtWeek, and the response from faculty, staff and students has been enthusiastic.

Faculty, staff and students have volunteered to teach and supervise classes and otherwise help the young people as they explore the world of art during four full days of classes that include a break for lunch provided by the university.

Moon said they hope to learn from next week's experiences and build on and expand the program to more schools next year.
