Workshops to Examine the Use of Art
and Compassion in Therapy

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge is offering two workshops for mental health professionals, one on combining art and therapy and the other on working with compassion in therapy, on Saturday, Feb. 27.

"The Art of Therapy: Counseling Art and Therapy to Deepen Your Clinical Skills" will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. in room 1202 of the Business Administration and Economics Building on the west side of campus near the corner of Plummer Street and Etiwanda Avenue.

Robin Scott Walker will present a multimedia excursion into the world of the artist, explaining what an artist does, how he does it and how this is directly relevant to the practice of psychotherapy.

"Connecting Compassion: How to Get What You Want Without Regretting it Later" will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Engineering Auditorium near the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St.

Gary Baran will present an introduction to the process of nonviolent communication, including how to deal with empathy, guilt, shame, depression, anger, appreciation, blame and criticism, needs, wants and values.

The workshops are part of a series of workshops the university's Centers in Educational Psychology and Counseling are offering this spring to help mental health professionals keep abreast of changes and new information in their field.

The series is approved by the California Association of Counseling and Development, the California Psychological Association Accrediting Agency and the Board of Behavioral Sciences.

It is designed to provide quality continuing education and training to licensed counselors, teachers, school psychologists, interns and other mental health professionals.

The workshop fees vary. To register or for more information, call Diana Castle or Heidi Kwok at (818) 677-2549.
