CSUN Hosts Conference on
California's New Academic Standards

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif.) - Cal State Northridge is hosting a two-day conference next month on California's new K-12 academic standards for language arts, mathematics and science.

The conference will be held May 21 and 22 in the Northridge Center of the University Student Union near the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

Conference attendees will have an opportunity to talk to some of the nation's leading educators about the challenges faced by state educators as they implement a standards-based accountability system.

Conference speakers include Marion Joseph, member of the California Board of Education; Maureen DiMarco, former California Secretary of Education; Bill Honig, former California State Superintendent of Schools; Janet Nicholas, member of the California State Board of Education; Nancy Ichinaga, principal of Bennett-Kew Elementary School and member of Gov. Gray Davis' Task Force on Education; R. James Milgram, professor of mathematics at Stanford University and co-author of the California Math Standards; and Chester E. Finn, president of the Fordham Foundation and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education.

Other speakers include E.D. Hirsch Jr., president of Core-Knowledge Foundation and a professor at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville; Hung-Hsi Wu, professor of mathematics at UC Berkeley; Sandra Stotsky, research associate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education; Bonnie Grossen, research associate at the National Center to Improve the Tools of Educators at the University of Oregon; and Richard Colvin, education reporter for the Los Angeles Times.

Additional conference participants include members of the Los Angeles Unified School District's Board of Education, administrators, teachers and parents.

The registration deadline is May 14. Registration is free, however lunches can be pre-ordered for each day of the conference for $6.95 each.
