Leading the way in breaking the gender, culture and age gap of the Mariachi tradition is the first all-female Mariachi group in the United States called Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles. They will perform "A Tribute to Women's Mariachi" at Cal State Northridge's Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 1.
Jose Hernandez of Mariachi Sol de Mexico founded the group through an extensive search for the best female Mariachi musicians throughout the country, which left him with an all-female powerhouse he named in honor of the City of Angels.
Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles has performed with many Latin performers, including Vicki Carr, Guadalupe Pineda, Miguel Aceves Mejia, Lucha Villa and Lola Beltran.
Tickets are available through the CSUN Ticket Office or TicketMaster Outlet for $15. For ticket information, call (818) 677-2488.
Parking for the Performing Arts Center is available at the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Plummer Street, 1/2 mile north of Nordhoff Street.
For more information on Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, call (626) 442-1254 or visit their website at http://www.mariachi-sol.com.
