CSUN's Newsroom Gets New Look Thanks to KCOP

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge's broadcasting students have spent the last ten years sitting behind a makeshift anchor desk to read their weekly newscasts on local cable.

But a gift of a new set from KCOP Channel 13 has put a new face on CSUN's "Valley View" broadcast.

"It's a great set," said journalism professor Rick Marks, who oversees the broadcast, which airs three times a week on local cable stations. "Definitely more professional."

The new set - a cityscape backdrop behind an 11-foot-long desk with built-in monitors - is estimated to be worth $75,000 and arrived in January.

"CSUN was first on my list when I started looking around for someone to donate the news set to because of the quality of the CSUN grads working for me," said Adam P. Bradshaw, manager of news operations at KCOP. "They all had a good education, so CSUN got the set."

Before the new set arrived, the students had to read scripts balanced on top of a desk that was built by other students ten years ago. It made the students look clumsy and unprofessional, said Nicolai Martinovich, technical supervisor for CSUN's broadcast journalism program.

"This is a tremendous help," Martinovich said. "It sharpens the look of the show."

Marks agreed.

'The new set provides the students a more professional appearance," he said.
