The judges are being honored for their work with the university's Judicial Internship Program, which gives Northridge students an idea of what it's like to work in the legal system.
"It's really hard to understate how wonderful this program is," said Sylvia Snowiss, a political science professor who coordinates the program. "The students say it's the highlight of their undergraduate experience. They say over and over again that what the books and classroom cannot teach, they learn in court from the judges."
The reception will take place at 6 p.m. in the University Club on the southeast corner of the campus at Nordhoff Street and Zelzah Avenue.
The internship program was initiated by the judges in 1992 for students interested in a legal career.
Interns spend 10 to 12 hours a week working under the supervision of a judge. They are exposed to a variety of court procedures, meet with court personnel and have an opportunity to discuss their observations with the judges. The students even engage in legal research when appropriate.
About 200 students have participated in the program since its inception. Many of them have gone on to law school or pursue careers in law enforcement or forensic psychology.
