CSUN Hosts Conference on Care of Elderly

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Issues concerning the care of elderly patients will be examined Thursday, April 15, at a conference at Cal State Northridge.

"Should This Elderly Patient Be Transferred?" will take place from 7:30 a.m. to noon in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

"The conference will bring together experts who manage chronic care of the elderly. They will ask tough questions about the interface between acute-level and long-term care," said Miriam Cotler, chair of CSUN's health sciences department. "What factors lead to the movement of patients between facilities? What direct or perverse institutional incentives and barriers encourage or discourage patient transfer? And from the point of view of operations, ethics, medical necessity and regulation, how can patient rights be safeguarded?"

Cotler said these and other long-term care issues will be examined at the conference.

The fee is $40 per person. Parking is available in Lot C at Zelzah Avenue and Plummer Street.

The conference is sponsored by CSUN's Department of Health Sciences.

For more information or to register, call the department at (818) 677-3101.
