CSUN Dinner Inaugurates Kenneth S. Devol
First Amendment Forum

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif.) - Cal State Northridge's Department of Journalism will hold its inaugural Kenneth S. Devol First Amendment Forum Dinner with keynote speaker, USC Law Professor Erwin Chemerinsky, starting at 6 p.m. in the Warner Center Woodland Hills Marriott on Wednesday, May 5.

Chemerinsky will discuss the First Amendment implications surrounding the tabloidization of journalism in his speech "News vs. Entertainment: Does it Matter if the Line Disappears? - First Amendment Implications."

The forum is being held in memory of former CSUN journalism professor Kenneth S. Devol. He taught courses in mass communication law at CSUN and USC and produced one of the standard undergraduate media law textbook, The Mass Media and the Supreme Court. His media experience included positions in television, public relations and newspapers.

Chemerinsky is an expert in the field of constitutional law, a graduate of Northwestern University and attended Harvard Law School. He is the author of three books, Interpreting the Constitution, Federal Jurisdiction and Constitutional Law: Principles and Policies.

Proceeds from the dinner will be used to benefit students through the department's involvement in a variety of First Amendment events, including speakers, memberships in professional associations and other activities that promote excellence in journalism.

Tickets for the event are $50 per person, $600 for a table of 10, which includes a listing in the program, or $1000 that includes a table of 10 with a full-page ad in the program.

A two-hour bicoastal satellite conference on "News vs. Entertainment: Does it Matter if the Line Disappears?" will take place at CSUN and George Washington University on Thursday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to noon Pacific Time.

Conference panelists will include Sam Donaldson, ABC correspondent; noted journalist Steven V. Roberts; Robert J. Dowling, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Hollywood Reporter; Howard Rosenberg, Los Angeles Times television critic; Andy Friendly, President of First Run Programming and Production and King World Productions and Fran Shea, President of E!
