May 13, 1999
An estimated 6,908 students are candidates to receive their diplomas - approximately 5,834 bachelors and 1,074 masters in about 50 fields - in a series of ceremonies that begin the evening of June 1 with the university's Honors Convocation.
"I am extremely proud of our 1999 graduates," said CSUN President Blenda J. Wilson. "They have worked very hard to reach this pinnacle, and they now begin a new phase of their lives. Many of our students have overcome great obstacles to complete their studies, and I am confident that they have the knowledge and skills to succeed and contribute to their communities as they lead us into the 21st century.
"As this is my last commencement as president of California State University, Northridge, it is very special to me," she added. "It will be an opportunity for me to express my pride in this remarkable university community."
Wilson recently announced she was stepping down as CSUN president to become the first president and CEO of the Nellie Mae Foundation. The New England-based organization works to promote quality education in that region, particularly for under-served groups.
During her tenure at the university Wilson is credited with rebuilding the campus after the devastating 1994 Northridge earthquake and initiating a major strategic planning effort to revitalize the university and redefine its mission.
The graduation celebration begins Tuesday, June 1, with the Honors Convocation and will continue each day with the individual college graduation ceremonies through Friday, June 4.
The speaker at this year's Honors Convocation is Wilson. The convocation is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the University Club at the corner of Nordhoff Street and Zelzah Avenue.
The formal commencement ceremonies are as follows:
