CSUN Offers Workshops on Couples Therapy, Empathy

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif.) - Cal State Northridge is offering mental health professionals two workshops on Saturday, April 24 - one on psychodynamic couples therapy and the other on helping therapists become better empathizers.

The workshop "Couples Therapy from a Psychodynamic Perspective" will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Business Auditorium 101 on the west side of the campus near Etiwanda Avenue and Plummer Street.

Marriage and family counselor Jonathan Brower will examine couples' therapy and the use of treatment rooms as an intrapsychic and interpersonal microcosm. He will also discuss how to present the problem as the tip of the iceberg and the couple in and out of treatment.

The workshop "Empathy and Mindfulness: East Meets West in the Heart of Psychotherapy" will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Business Auditorium 101.

Marriage and family counselor Jerome J. Front will discuss therapists' empathy and its applications for meditative awareness and the therapist's self and presence.

Affordable fees and continuing education units are offered to marriage family child counselors, licensed clinical social workers and educators.

This is one of a series of workshops the university's Centers in Educational Psychology and Counseling are offering this spring to help mental health professionals keep abreast of changes and information in the field.

The series is approved by the California Association of Counseling and Development, the California Psychological Association Accrediting Agency and the Board of Behavioral Sciences.

It is designed to provide quality continuing education and training to licensed counselors, teachers, school psychologists, interns and other mental health professionals.

To register or for more information, call Diana Castle or Heidi Kwok at (818) 677-2549.

CSUN has about 27,000 full- and part-time students, offering 48 different bachelor's and master's degrees. Founded in 1958, it is celebrating its 40th anniversary and is the only four-year university in the San Fernando Valley.
