Naturalists Leave Mark on California

University of San Diego history professor Iris H.W. Engstrand, a specialist in the history of the American West and Spanish colonial history, will deliver the annual W.P. Whitsett Lecture on Friday, April 11, at Cal State Northridge.

Engstrand's presentation, "The 18th Century Enlightenment Comes to California," will examine the work of early California naturalists. The lecture will focus on the efforts of Josˇ Maria–o Mozino, a Mexican naturalist who visited California in the late 18th century.

Engstrand's presentation will take place at 8 p.m. in the University Club on the southeast corner of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

Engstrand earned her Ph.D. in history from the University of Southern Californian and has written more than 25 articles and eight books, her latest book being Quest for Empire.

The W.P. Whitsett California Lecture Series was founded in 1986 as part of the Whitsett Endowment at California State University, Northridge, in memory of William Paul Whitsett and his role in the history of the San Fernando Valley.

A reception and dinner will precede the lecture. The cost of the dinner is $25 per person. Dinner reservations are required. For more information about the dinner or the lecture, call the History Department at (818) 677-3566.
