CSUN Students Offering Free Tax Assistance

Low-income individuals and families who need help preparing their state and federal income taxes can receive free assistance beginning next month from Cal State Northridge business students.

The university's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will offer basic tax help at 16 locations throughout the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles to residents who cannot afford professional tax assistance and have a maximum gross income of $40,000 per family. Specialized services available for senior citizens, non-English speakers and the handicapped.

VITA coordinators suggest that taxpayers bring with them tax forms, W-2 forms, interest and dividend statements (1099-INT, 1099-DIV), receipts and records for deductions, a copy of last year's tax returns, and any other related materials.

More than 300 Cal State Northridge students have gone through an intensive training to prepare them to deal with most of the basic problems taxpayers confront.

CSUN was the first university in the nation to institute the VITA program in 1971. Since then, the university has assisted colleges across the country in establishing their own VITA programs.

Last year, CSUN students prepared more than 15,000 state and federal tax returns.
