CSUN to Host 'PR' Training for Nonprofits

About 200 volunteers and staff members from nonprofit organizations that serve the San Fernando Valley will learn how to work more effectively with media to publicize their services and fundraising projects at a day of media training here Jan. 29.

The workshop, "Interacting with Media: A Day for Nonprofits," is jointly sponsored by Cal State Northridge's Office of Public Relations, the Los Angeles Times Valley Edition, and NBC 4.

The program will include "show-and-tell examples" of successful community relations and fundraising campaigns, both low-budget and large-budget; how to get public service coverage; how to co-market with the media themselves; crisis management; and an explanation of how media make news decisions.

Presenters will include Bill Lord, vice president and news director of NBC 4; Ardith Hilliard, managing editor of the Los Angeles Times Valley Edition; Nelkane Benton, director of community relations for KABC Radio; Jim Giggans, NBC 4 news anchor; and several other news and marketing professionals.

The workshop will be in the Performing Arts Center of the USU. The registration fee of $25 includes continental breakfast and lunch. A limited number of scholarship registrations are available for organizations in need.
