Essence Editor and Husband Hold Book Signing at CSUN

Susan L. Taylor, editor-in-chief of Essence magazine, and her husband, writer Khephra Burns, will talk about their new book "Confirmation: The Spiritual Wisdom That Has Shaped Our Lives," on Tuesday, May 6, at Cal State Northridge.

"Confirmation" is an essay describing Taylor and Burns' shared spiritual coming of age and their love for each other, drawing from their own spiritual and cultural roots.

Their visit will begin at 2 p.m. with a reception in the university's Matador Bookstore near the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge. The authors will talk about their book and answer questions from the audience at 2:20 p.m. The book signing will follow at 3 p.m.

Taylor has been the editor-in-chief of Essence magazine since 1981. Under her guidance, the magazine's circulation has increased from 600,000 to 1 million, reaching an estimated 5.2 million readers monthly. Taylor also writes a popular column for the magazine.

This is the first book Taylor has written with her husband, a noted television and magazine writer. Burns has written for PBS television affiliate WNET. He also wrote William Mile's award-winning film series, "Black Champions," and "Black Stars in Orbit."

Taylor's first book, "In the Spirit: The Inspirational Writings of Susan L. Taylor," was published in 1993. Her second book, "Lessons in Living," came out in 1995.

Taylor and Burns' visit to CSUN is sponsored by the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., and the university's DuBois-Hamer Institute. For more information, call (818) 994-1888.
