National Science Foundation Ranks
CSUN #1 in Undergraduate Performance

The National Science Foundation has ranked Cal State Northridge first in the nation among 529 master's colleges and universities for producing undergraduates who go on to obtain doctoral degrees in science and engineering fields.

A recent NSF report found that 182 Northridge graduates went on to earn doctorates in science and engineering between 1991-1995.

"The report by the National Science Foundation confirms what we know on campus: Cal State Northridge has superior undergraduate programs in science, computer science, and engineering," said CSUN president Blenda J. Wilson.

"In virtually every major high tech and aerospace company, you will find CSUN graduates in positions of leadership and management," Wilson said, noting that astronaut Scott Horowitz, who will be giving a commencement address on campus May 29, is an alum of the university's undergraduate program.

The NSF divided U.S. colleges and universities into segments for the study, defining master's institutions as those offering a full range of baccalaureate programs and graduate education through the master's level. Other segments were research universities, doctoral universities and baccalaureate colleges.

In the master's segment, other Cal State campuses ranked close behind, including Long Beach (No. 2), San Francisco (No. 3), Fullerton (No. 4) and San Jose (No. 7).
