Journal Highlights Work of Young Local Scientists

Cal State Northridge professor Steven Oppenheimer has just published a journal highlighting research by young scientists from across the country and Canada.

"The Journal of Student Research Abstracts, Volume III" reports the results of more than 600 experiments and projects conducted by 869 elementary, junior high and high school science students.

"We believe that this is a first in the academic world-a journal completely devoted to summaries of national pre-college student research projects," said Oppenheimer, a CSUN biology professor and head of the university's Center for Cancer and Developmental Biology.

Oppenheimer started the journal a few years ago to highlight student projects in his National Science Foundation and Howard Hughes Medical Institute teacher enhancement programs.

Among the topics reported are "The Memory of the Solitary Giant Green Anemone" by students at Portola Middle School in Tarzana; "Effects of B-1 Vitamins on PH Readings in Garden Soil" by students at Park View Intermediate School in Lancaster; "Comparing natural and Synthetic Polymers" by students at Holy Martyrs Armenian Elementary and Ferrahian Armenian High schools; and "Effects of Noise on the Human Ear" by students at North Hollywood Biological Zoo Magnet.
